How It Works

This checklist is organized by timeline, not by category, because that is how a move actually unfolds. It starts eight weeks out with research and budgeting, moves through decluttering, packing, and the final logistics of moving week, and ends with the first tasks to handle once you have arrived.

Each section is a short, specific list of tasks for that stage, so you are never looking at one overwhelming master list. Print it at the start of your move and work through it stage by stage, or jump straight to whichever week you are currently in.

It is built to be used alongside our full moving budget guide, which breaks down the actual costs behind each stage of the move in more detail.

FAQs

Is this checklist specific to one country?
No. The tasks are general enough to apply to a local move, a long distance move, or an international relocation. Country specific steps like visas or customs declarations are not included, since those vary too much to cover in a single general checklist.

Can I edit or customize it?
The PDF is designed to print and use as is, with blank checkboxes next to each task. If a task does not apply to your situation, simply skip it.

Do I need to complete tasks in order?
The timeline is a guide, not a strict rule. Some tasks can move earlier or later depending on your situation, for example if you are selling a home rather than renting, some steps will shift.

Is there a digital version I can check off online?
Not currently. This is a printable PDF designed for exactly that purpose, a physical checklist you can keep visible during a busy, stressful few weeks. An interactive version may be added in the future.

What You Need to Know

Moving checklists work best when they are visible, not filed away. Print a physical copy and keep it somewhere you will actually see it, on the fridge, taped inside a closet door, or on your desk, rather than saved in a folder you will not reopen.

The most commonly skipped step is not a task at all, it is timing. Starting the checklist late, particularly the decluttering and packing supply steps, is the single biggest driver of last minute moving stress. Starting eight weeks out, even if the move itself is simpler than that, gives enough buffer for the unexpected.

If you are also planning your move financially, our budgeting guide and Cost of Living Calculator pair naturally with this checklist, one covers what to do, the other covers what to expect it to cost.
