Tips for Choosing the Perfect Pet Name
Keep it short. One or two syllable names work best for pets because they are easier to say quickly and pets respond better to short, sharp sounds. Names like Buddy, Luna, Max, Cleo, or Finn are classic choices for a reason. If you fall in love with a longer name like Biscuit or Clementine, make sure it shortens naturally to a one-syllable nickname.
Avoid names that sound like commands. Names that rhyme with common commands can confuse your pet during training. For example, “Kit” sounds similar to “sit”, “Jo” sounds similar to “no”, and “Ray” sounds similar to “stay”. This matters more for dogs than cats, but it is worth considering for any trainable pet.
Say it out loud before committing. A name might look great written down but feel awkward to call out loud, especially in public. Say it clearly at different volumes. If you would feel embarrassed calling it at a dog park, it probably is not the right choice.
Consider their personality and appearance. Colour-inspired names like Shadow, Ginger, Blaze, or Snowball have stood the test of time because they create an instant visual connection. Personality-inspired names like Chaos, Zen, Rocket, or Duchess work equally well once you have spent a few days watching your pet’s character emerge.

Cats: Cat names tend to lean more elegant or mysterious — Luna, Mochi, Cleo, Oreo, Simba, and Whiskers are perennial favourites. Cats with distinct colouring often get colour names: Midnight, Cinder, Ivory, or Marmalade. Japanese and French names have become particularly fashionable for cats in recent years.
Birds and small pets: Birds often get names that reflect their vocal nature or bright colours — Mango, Kiwi, Pepper, Sunny, or Teal. Rabbits, hamsters, and guinea pigs often get sweet food names or soft, rounded-sound names: Biscuit, Peanut, Clover, or Thistle.
