How to Calculate a Discount

Calculating a discount is simple once you understand the formula. To find the sale price, multiply the original price by the discount percentage expressed as a decimal, then subtract that amount from the original price. For example, a 20% discount on a $85 item: $85 × 0.20 = $17 saved, so the sale price is $68. Our calculator does this instantly for any price and any percentage.

The reverse calculation — finding the original price from a sale price — works by dividing the sale price by one minus the discount rate. If something costs $68 after a 20% discount, the original price was $68 ÷ 0.80 = $85. Use the Find Original mode on the calculator above for this. This is particularly useful when you see a sale tag and want to know what the item originally cost.

The Multi-Item mode lets you calculate discounts on up to three items at once and see the total savings across all of them. This is useful when shopping across multiple departments or comparing bundles. All three modes work for any currency worldwide — just enter your local prices and the math is identical.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate 30% off a price? Multiply the price by 0.30 to get the discount amount, then subtract from the original. On a $120 item: $120 × 0.30 = $36 off, sale price $84. Or use the quick percentage buttons on the calculator.

How do I find what percentage I saved? Divide the amount saved by the original price and multiply by 100. If you saved $20 on a $80 item: ($20 ÷ $80) × 100 = 25% saved. The calculator shows this automatically.

Does this work for VAT or tax-included prices? Yes — just enter whatever price is shown on the tag, whether it includes tax or not, and the discount math works the same way.

Does this work for any country or currency? Yes, completely. Discount calculations are pure mathematics and work identically for any currency worldwide.
