Understanding Your Fuel Costs

Fuel is one of those costs that quietly adds up. A daily commute that feels small in the moment can turn into a significant monthly expense once you account for every trip across four or five working days a week. This calculator gives you both numbers, the cost of a single trip and a realistic monthly figure, so you can budget accurately or compare the true cost of driving against other options like transit or carpooling.

The calculation depends on three things: how far you are travelling, how efficiently your vehicle uses fuel, and the price of fuel where you are filling up. North America and the UK typically describe fuel efficiency in miles per gallon, where a higher number means better efficiency. Canada, Australia, and most of the world instead use litres per 100 kilometres, where a lower number is better. Selecting your region above handles this difference automatically so you do not need to worry about converting between the two yourself.

Why does my region matter for the gallon size?

A US gallon and a UK or Imperial gallon are not the same volume, the UK gallon is roughly 20 percent larger. If a calculator does not account for this, a UK driver entering their MPG figure could get a fuel cost that is meaningfully wrong. Selecting your region ensures the correct gallon size is used behind the scenes for an accurate result.

How is the monthly fuel budget calculated?

Once you enter how many times per week you make a particular trip, such as a commute to work, the calculator takes your one-time trip cost and multiplies it out across an average month. This gives a more realistic monthly figure than simply guessing a flat number, since most people think about their driving habits in terms of a weekly pattern rather than a monthly total.

Where can I find my vehicle’s fuel efficiency number?

Most vehicles display an average fuel consumption figure on the dashboard trip computer, or you can find official combined fuel economy ratings in your owner’s manual or on the manufacturer’s website. If you are unsure, tracking a full tank from empty to empty and dividing the distance travelled by the fuel used will give you a real-world number specific to your own driving habits.
