In Canada, deductions include federal and provincial income tax based on graduated brackets, CPP contributions up to the annual maximum, and EI premiums. In the USA, deductions include federal income tax based on your filing status, state income tax, Social Security at 6.2% up to the wage base, and Medicare at 1.45%. In the UK, deductions include income tax under PAYE and National Insurance contributions. In Australia, deductions include income tax under the ATO brackets and the Medicare Levy. The effective tax rate shown is the percentage of your total gross income that goes to all deductions combined. The marginal tax rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of income — the highest bracket you fall into. This calculator uses standard deduction rates and does not account for employer benefits, additional tax credits, garnishments, or other personal circumstances. Does this work for hourly workers? Yes — multiply your hourly rate by your annual hours (for example 40 hours per week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours) to get your annual gross salary, then enter that amount.
