About This GST / HST / VAT Calculator

This free sales tax calculator covers the most common consumption tax systems worldwide. For Canada it calculates GST, HST, PST and QST by province and territory, applying the correct combined rate automatically. For the UK it covers all three VAT rates: standard (20%), reduced (5%) and zero-rated (0%). For Australia it applies the flat 10% GST. For the United States and all other countries, you can enter any tax rate manually.

The calculator works in two directions. Use the “Add Tax” mode when you have a price before tax and want to know the final amount you will pay. Use the “Remove Tax” mode when you have a tax-inclusive total and want to find the original pre-tax price, which is useful for business invoicing, expense claims, and bookkeeping.

Canadian sales tax is among the most complex in the world because it operates on two levels: federal and provincial. The federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) is 5% across all provinces. Most provinces then add their own provincial sales tax (PST), or have combined it with the federal GST into a single Harmonised Sales Tax (HST). Quebec uses its own system called the QST. This calculator handles all provinces and territories correctly, including the dual-layer calculations for British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec.

All rates in this calculator reflect the 2026 rates currently in effect. Sales tax rates do change occasionally. Always verify current rates with the relevant tax authority for formal accounting or legal purposes.

Frequently Asked Questions

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is the federal tax of 5% applied across all of Canada. PST (Provincial Sales Tax) is a separate provincial tax charged on top of GST in British Columbia (7%), Manitoba (7%) and Saskatchewan (6%). HST (Harmonised Sales Tax) is a combined federal and provincial tax used in Ontario (13%), New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Prince Edward Island (all 15%). Quebec uses a separate system with GST plus QST (9.975%), totalling approximately 14.975%.

To remove tax from a tax-inclusive total, divide the total price by (1 plus the tax rate as a decimal). For example, to remove 13% HST from a total of $113, divide 113 by 1.13, which gives $100 as the pre-tax price. The tax amount is then $113 minus $100, which equals $13. Use the “Remove Tax from Total” mode in this calculator to do this automatically.

The UK has three VAT rates. The standard rate of 20% applies to most goods and services. The reduced rate of 5% applies to specific items including home energy (electricity and gas), children’s car seats, and certain health products. The zero rate of 0% applies to most food, children’s clothing and footwear, books and newspapers, and passenger transport. Zero-rated items are still technically VAT-taxable, meaning VAT-registered businesses can reclaim input VAT on them, unlike exempt items.

No. Australia’s GST of 10% applies to most goods and services, but a significant number of items are GST-free. These include most fresh food and basic groceries, some medical and health services, some education services, childcare services, and exported goods and services. Financial services and residential rent are also input-taxed rather than GST-free, meaning no GST is charged on the supply but the supplier cannot claim GST credits on related purchases.

Unlike most countries that use a national VAT or GST system, the United States has no federal sales tax. Instead, sales tax is set at the state and local level. Rates vary significantly, from 0% in states like Oregon, Montana and New Hampshire, to combined rates above 10% in some cities. Most states charge between 4% and 8% at the state level, with additional local rates added on top. Five states have no state sales tax at all: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon.

Whether you need to register for and charge GST or VAT depends on your annual turnover and the rules in your country. In Canada, businesses must register for GST/HST once their annual revenue exceeds $30,000. In the UK, the VAT registration threshold is £90,000 of taxable turnover per year (2026). In Australia, the GST registration threshold is $75,000 AUD annually. Once registered, you collect the tax on behalf of the government and can claim back the tax you paid on business purchases. This calculator is for consumer and reference use. For business tax obligations, consult a qualified accountant or tax adviser.
